As Lisser discusses below, even in 1924, the science—including standard endocrinology textbooks—clearly stated that hormonal issues underlie weight problems, and that excess weight is a symptom of those issues. Knowing that the theory that diets and exercise were not a cure was radical to some, Lisser carefully reminded the reader that that these were not his ideas—they were established science represented in a wide range of textbooks at the time.

It is obviously beyond the confines of this paper to describe in detail the various types of ductless gland disease in which obesity is a common and prominent symptom . . . Many excellent text-books are available, such as Falta, Cushing, Barker in Monographic Medicine, etc. There is nothing original in the observation that obesity is a striking symptom of incretory deficiencies.
